2010 So Far...

We're barely two months into 2010, but some great music has already been released. Vampire Weekend's Contra definitely holds my favorite album of the year spot so far, but it's still early.

I'm not even going to attempt an album list, so I'll just hit you guys with a quick top 5 songs of 2010, in no particular order.

1. "Swim" by Surfer Blood
A few teens from Florida--known of whom surf, by the way--throw together a nice indie rock song with a super-catchy hook. I hear elements of U2, The Cribs, even a little Pavement.

Surfer Blood - "Swim"

2. "Odessa" by Caribou
Oh my goodness. I knew Caribou was good, but this shit is ridiculous. Polyrhythmical awesomeness is wrapped around a deep, rumbling, somewhat gooshy bass line. The feelings one gets while listening to this is almost indescribable--it's soft, yet there's something looming in the background--kind of like being stoned and walking through a dark woods.

Caribou - "Odessa"

3. "Heaven's On Fire" by The Radio Dept.
After breaking onto the scene via tracks featured in Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette, The Radio Dept. have been somewhat silent, though this year they return with their shoegazey Swedish pop. "Heaven's On Fire" is more of the same from this group, but it stands out, mostly due to the semi-anarchistic quote from Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore at the beginning.

4. "What Makes Him Act So Bad?" by Adam Green
The crooner of crude returns with album Minor Love, without a doubt his best effort since Friends of Mine. Minor Love sounds a bit like Lou Reed's Transformer, a dark, lo-fi, very New Yorker feel is all over the record, especially on this single. A nice little guitar solo rounds it out, and Mr. Green sounds more like himself than he perhaps ever has.

Adam Green - "What Makes Him Act So Bad?"

5. "Diplomat's Son" by Vampire Weekend
From the aforementioned Cousins, "I Think Ur A Contra" is the most interesting love song I've heard in a while. Check it out.

Shameless Self-Promotion!

Welcome, welcome you lovely people to Flutie plays the Flutie, the most ghettofabulous blog about music known to man. I shall be your curator of all things full of pitch and dynamics, chords and whammies, and all that wonderful stuff.

My name is Phil. I'm a student at the University of Oklahoma, a Norman resident, a musician, a singer, an activist, and even a bit of a sociopath. I've been in love with music, especially punk and experimental/psychedelic rock, since my discovery of The Strokes at the age of 12. I haven't looked back since.

I recently became the singer for a kickass rock and roll band full of AARP-qualifying folks; but just because they're soon to wear diapers doesn't mean they don't how to kick ass. We are Zombie vs. Shark, and we're here to melt faces and make your booties shake. Check us out on Facebook or MySpace, jessss...?
